Set Your Goals - This Will Be The Death Of UsSet Your Goals – This Will Be The Death Of Us

Before I even received the new album by Set Your Goals, I went and checked out a few reviews for it as it was an album I had been looking forward to and I wanted to see what others thought of it and so far I haven’t managed to come across a good review with one publication giving the album a 1 out of 10 rating which makes me question if they actually even listened to the album as it is a classic fast and furious poppy-punk record from start to finish and features a few special guest musicians from the friends set Your Goals have gathered during their time as a band.

From the blasting open moments of ‘This Will Be The Death Of Us’ you know that you are in for a good with the new Set Your Goals album, the open guitar riffs come at you of a speed of 100 miles per hour and pretty much every track on the album keeps up that fast paced guitar driven formula and the album rocks out right until the group sing-a-long vocals of ‘Our Ethos: A Legacy To Pass On’.

‘With Hoffman Lenses We Will See The Truth’ is a short instrumental track and the guitar riffs are fantastic, the track may seem a bit pointless but when you have guitar riffs as fast and sharp as this you need to show them off, it would of been better hearing them in a full length song but doesn’t happen.

‘Look Closer’ is a proper sing-a-long poppy-punk track that has radio friendly single written all over it, think of the most melodic song from bands such as New Found Glory, Zebrahead and I Hate Kate well this song is right up there with those bands and songs.

‘Summer Jam’ features some proper catchy yet bouncy bass lines, once again the vocals are very fast and melodic, to start with the song will have you tapping your feet along and by the end you will have left your seat and be moving around your room like you have been let out of your padded cell for the day, this is set Your Goals at their upmost catchy best, the end of the song features a massive melodic group chant-a-long that you will not be forgetting for a while.

The song that will stick out the most to people on the album is ‘The Few That Remain’ as it features Hayley Williams from Paramore on guest vocals and she does a really good job, there is a bit of talking banter between Hayley and the members of Set Your goals mid song which show that serious is not the name of the game here but having fun is, when Hayley’s vocals come in towards the later part of the song it is good hearing her compete with the more hardcore vocal style of Set Your Goals, it works very well.

‘Equals’ is a really good melodic song, whilst ‘Gaia Bleeds (Make Way For Men)’ has Set Your Goals return to their hardcore ways and the power, attitude, passion and aggression of the song is enough to rip a few extra holes in your speakers, ‘Arrival Notes’ is the token acoustic song that bands seem to have to have on their albums these days, but this one is a bit different as it is a full on minute long instrumental piece.

The album closes with ‘Our Ethos: A Legacy To Pass On’ the song is really hard hitting and also the longest running track on the album running well into the 4minutes mark, the song features guest vocals from Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory, the song is melodic but it is also has a hardcore edge in places giving it that 90’s skate punk feeling.

Set your goals have hinted that this could well be there last album even though it is only their second album, and if the name is anything to go by then it could well be the case but let’s hope not as at the moment I am really loving what Set Your Goals do they have that perfect sound that combines poppy-punk with hardcore but never goes to extreme with each way it turns.

Once you listen to ‘This Will Be The Death Of Us’ you will be addicted and want to check these guys out on the live circuit.

4/5
