Album Review
Chris Cornell - ScreamChris Cornell – Scream

During the summer of 2008 Chris Cornell was down on the bill at the UK Download festival which takes place at Donington Park every June, he was down as the co-headliner for the Sunday playing just before the Lostprophets, however he pulled out very near the last minute so he could concentrate on working on his new solo album, well the solo album is now finished and is a Timbaland production called ‘Scream’ which is due for release any day now and Chris Cornell is also back on the Download Festival line up for this year but has had to settle for a much lower down spot on the bill, could this be to do with the fact he pulled of last year’s festival or due to the fact that he has made a very brave move with his new album?

Chris Cornell has made a very brave move with ‘Scream’ in the way that he has totally changed his sound, the song features 14 tracks which were all written by himself and then Timbaland went on to produce the songs given the album a hip-hop rock power pop feel, now it will be interesting to see if the hardcore Chris Cornell fans who have followed him throughout his solo career so far and also his time in bands such as Audioslave and Soundgarden really dig his new album ‘Scream’ or not. The way I see it Chris Cornell is going to gain a whole new range of fans but the same time he is going to lose some fans whilst other hardcore fans become converted and like his new style.

‘Scream’ opens up with the albums lead single ‘Part Of Me’, now this song is actually the best song on the album so if you have already heard it and aren’t that keen on it then there is not really any point of you carrying on listening to the album, but if you are like me and like the song then the album might just well be for you. The introduction to ‘Part Of Me’ sounds like a major Hollywood movie starting up, then seconds later the song goes on a catchy journey with its full on disco beats, hip-hop style groove and every so catchy lyrics of “That bitch ain’t a part of me, No that bitch ain’t a part of me”.

The second track on the album ‘Time’ comes in without you even noticing, you think your still listening to ‘Part Of Me’ for about a minute and then you start to wonder where are the lyrics “That bitch ain’t a part of me’ and that’s when you notice that the track has finished and ‘Time’ is a good minute through, the song has a catchy groove and becomes a powerful track.

All the tracks on the album kind of bleed through, it’s done so there is over one hour of constant music with no breaks in-between songs and the idea of it was intended as a resurrection of the original album format back in the day, it works well here but I can’t see it catching on with every band taking on this idea when creating their album.

There are many strong tracks on the album such as the fast vocally paced ‘Sweet Revenge’, the title track ‘Scream’ and the fun dance track that is ‘Enemy’ the song is fast and full of rhythm and style and will have you wanting to bust some moves on the dance floor, sadly at the same time there are also lots of bad sounding tracks such as the ever so annoying ‘Ground Zero’ which is bound to piss most people off after a couple of listens, also ‘Take Me Alive’ is a piss poor sounding track.

What I have noticed is that most people have put ‘Scream’ down before they have even listened to it, in reviews I have read for it people have just mentioned the first track which happens to be the single and then wrote a few more words and the review is over with the album getting 1 out of 5 or 10 which to me seems that they haven’t even bothered to listen to the album all the way through just because they don’t like hip-hop, but I feel when doing reviews you need to be open minded and don’t bring your personal preferences too much into place or you will never have a positive thing to say about anything, Chris Cornell deserves 5 out of 5 for having balls to do something totally different but on the music front of things ‘Scream’ deserves no more than 3 out of 5 as it has some great moments but by far too many tracks act as fillers.

3/5
