Album Review
Goldspot - Tally Of The Yes MenGoldspot - Tally Of The Yes Men

The album opens with quite a gentle track called "Rewind" that features a fascinating sweeping breakdown of strings and xylophone. It's quite fantastic. Alternative Rock. Not claiming to be, or not trying to be, something it's not. Not trying to be radical or make your head explode. Just great song-writing. All that said, I get the feeling that with a whole album of this stuff, you'll need an insertion of energy somewhere. It's good, but it's all quite slow and dreary, and I think we need some prozac please, nurse.

Floating through the album, it's not until track five that there's a hint of energy. "Time Bomb," quite a relevant title, is a four minute song of pure jolliness. It's just the epitome of happy, in musical-format. Track seven, and the latest single, "It's Getting Old," and we've retained some energy. I'd say this is the stand out track. In fact, maybe it's not energy we've retained, but it's just got that spark. The spark that says it's a great song, it's certainly pushing all my buttons.

There seems to be a very Beatle-ish sound to Goldspot, but a Beatles who only record slow songs, and not their catchy floor-filler favourites. For the remainder of the album, things slow down more and more, and it's a surprise that by the time you reach the eleventh track "In The Post," that things aren't actually going backwards. I won't even begin to talk about the irony in the song title "Feel Good Program Of The Year!"

So to sum up Goldspot. They're a band with potential. If they buck up their ideas and rock out a bit, there's no question they can kick some ass on the indie rock scene. Not that there's an issue with their music as such, it's all very good, but in small doses. An album boasting more variety of content may have been an easier listen.

3/5
