Juilette And The Licks - Four On The FloorJuliette And The Licks - Four on The Floor

I'm always slightly wary of bands whose name is "The Singer and The Band", as it reminds me of the 1950s, Happy Days and Buddy Holly. Luckily, Juliette and The Licks turn this on its head and aren't the kind of band you'd have seen playing in Al's Diner. Fronted by (and you might have guessed already by now) American actress Juliette Lewis of Natural Born Killers fame, the four-piece Licks play a riff loaded melodic garage-rock, think of AC-DC squaring up for a fight with the Hives who happen to be hiding behind a slightly pissed up lairy girl and you'll be on the right track.

Opener, Smash and Grab's call and response chorus and lyrics like "pumpin pistol steel muscle rippin up my feel" wouldn't be out of place on a Donnas record, especially with the solo that follows.

Sticky Honey shows a great groove, although the hook borrows heavily from the Angus Young riff library, while Death of A Whore is a more laid back, 60's style cleaner tune, not out of place on a Woodstock soundtrack of hippies dancing in the mud.

Four on The Floor's production is spot on, perhaps helped by a certain Mr D. Grohl who plays drums on this record, something I only noticed when I looked in the inlay after hearing some killer fills, the rest of the beats are solid, but nothing over the top (the mark of a good drummer perhaps?) In fact, in places you'd be forgiven for thinking Juliette sounds like a younger Courtney Love, but I wouldn't tell Dave that if I were you.

The production does a good job of keeping you interested, using different guitars sounds which are heavy but not too aggressive, and vocals which are broken and shouted, but not too harsh to piss you off - all in all, an impressive selection of tunes I was pleasantly surprised to find. Hassle are a diverse label, and it's good to see them putting out this alongside Alexisonfire's records. Well worth checking out.

3.5/5
