Karnivool - ThemataKarnivool - Themata

Karnivool are a five-piece progressive rock band from Australia who formed over ten years ago. The band released their first studio album 'Themata' in Australia back in 2005, two years on and the band are about to release the album around the rest of the world. 'Themata' is a progressive rock album with most songs running for 4-5 minutes in length and the sound is quite heavy but catchy with heavy guitars and great melodies with moments sounding similar to Tool.

'Themata' starts off really good with a track called ‘C.O.T.E’ which starts off with a mellow introduction which soon gains pace and sound in no time at all leading on to an assault of heavy guitars and great drumming before the song mellows down in pace and sound again with the sound structures changing throughout the whole song. Album title track 'Themata' starts off a lot heavier than the previous track with Ian Kenny's vocals shining and sounding so similar to James Maynard Keenan from Tool in places on this song. The vocals work well with the music especially over the top of the duel assault of guitars. 'Shutter Speed' is another great track and has a really catchy vibe and still manages to maintain heaviness. The same can be said for 'Fear Of The Sky'.

Now this is where things start to go wrong for Karnivool as the first four songs have been great with great structures and a good mixture of sound but everything sounds very average ongoing. 'Roquefort' is quite a heavy track but is all over the place with near 5 minutes of pure noise. 'Scarabs' is the shortest track on the album clocking in at just over two minutes long and is just a racket of noise that will entertain some people but does nothing for me. 'Sewn And Silent' is a really slow paced song and the nearest Karnivool will ever get to a ballad but sadly doesn’t fit in well with the album. 'Synops' starts to bring back something good to the album with its dark sound but just as its about to explode into heaviness it backs down in sound. The album finishes with 'Change (Part 1)’ which you can’t really class as a song.

Overall Karnivool are a good band and the first few songs on 'Themata' showcase how good they are at writing a good tune but the rest of the album shows how samey and average the band can also be. 'Themata' is not going to bring the band the success they want over the world as there are so many bands with a similar sound that make music better. But after all, 'Themata' is over two years old so lets hope the band learn for the follow up.

3/5
