Japanese Voyeurs - YolkJapanese Voyeurs – Yolk

Over the past couple of years the Japanese Voyeurs have been working their arse off touring the toilet sized venues across the UK whilst also taking to the big stage on the odd occasion supporting more high profile bands such as their recent support slot on Slash’s headline tour of the UK, the music that Japanese Voyeurs have released started off very lacklustre, but the more singles they have released the better and more exciting they have got.

The band’s debut album ‘Yolk’ has been in the works for some time now and it is good to see that it has finally been released, and after listening to it a couple of times over you really will start to appreciate the true potential of the Japanese Voyeurs as the riffs are massive, the drumming is constant and always providing a big bang and the vocals of Romily are so distinctive that she could well become your new favourite front lady.

The album opens with ‘You’re So Cool’ and from the off some big and tasty sounding guitar riffs come in with Romily’s wonderfully loud and clear vocals coming in seconds later and moments after that you are treated to the repetitive yet upbeat chorus of “You’re So Cool, You’re So Cool’,

‘Dumb’ is bloody amazing and really deserves to be a future single and have some radio play as the Japanese Voyeurs have managed to keep their signature heavy sound but also managed to make things sound that little bit extra up beat and poppy, seriously the song runs at 100 miles per hour and is not afraid of smashing everything up in its tracks, this is the true mosh pit anthem for all Japanese Voyeur fans.

‘Cry Baby’ is the band’s current single and it really does remind me of Hole in places and happens to be a big sounding grunge song with dirty distorted guitar riffs, twangy basslines, breathtaking drumming and a set of vocals which you are bound to fall for from the start.

‘Smother Me’ is a very interesting track, it starts off in a stripped back way sounding so mellow compared to the majority of the material on the album and this really gives Romily time to shine above everything with her beautiful vocal range but as the song progresses a mad flurry of heavy guitar riffs morphs the song into an instrumental masterpiece which comes and goes as the song continues to run.

‘Get Hole’ is one of the bands previous singles and just like ‘Cry Baby’ it reminds me very much of Hole with Romily’s vocals having a Courtney Love feel about them.

The most genius moment on the album is ‘X-Ray Ted’ as the song is heavy as fuck with some of the best instrumental work that the Japanese Voyeurs have ever come up with, the whole song is very big and aggressive sounding and quite progressive towards the end, vocally Romily is on top form again and screams “I Only Want To Be An Animal” over and over again.

If you leave the album to run after the last track finishes you will hear a truly raw and passionate performance from Romily as sings and screams her heart out in a very stripped down dirty way with lyrics of “That Little Bitch, That Little Liar, That Little Skank, That Little Whole” sending shivers down your spine.

Japanese Voyeurs have managed to create a stunningly raw album thanks to the help of ‘GGGarth Richardson’ who handled the production duties, and I believe that you will start to hear from the Japanese Voyeurs a lot more now that ‘Yolk’ is out.
