Breaking the Day - Survived by NoneBreaking the Day – Survived by None

This album is the debut for Chatham basted band Breaking The Day who since 2007 have experienced a lot in the form of shows. The cover for the album just screams out atmospheric progressive rock so I instantly thought of bands like Porcupine Tree and Tool. I wasn’t entirely wrong with my presumptions as they do produce a form of progressive metal but unlike the legends of the genre they haven’t really achieved greatness with this record.

To start with let’s take a look at the vocals which have a tendency to repeatedly change from high pitched screaming with a hint of a whiney squeal to an attempt at some really deep death metal growling with not much success as it doesn’t really sound as thick as it should. Next up to take a look at would be the actual music behind the vocals; the style is quite heavy on the bass and quite dropped in quite a few of the songs giving a sort of sinister twang that rings out which each note which is quite cool and had a lot of potential to mix and integrate with little licks and riffs, however they don’t they proceed to play near enough the same thing over and over again until the song is finished, its repetitive and gets really boring really quickly.

The intro’s as well start to get on my tits after a while, they are far too long especially in songs such as “Leave a Blanket of Ash on the Ground” and “Nightmare Dependancies” (which is also spelt wrong I do believe) take over a minute to kick in and then there aren’t even any lyrics or verses just the odd scream and the same chord sequences over and over.
Whilst I have talked about all the pitfalls and problems I have with the music there is a light at the end at the tunnel; like I previously mentioned with their sound they have so much they could do with it and so many different paths, the band are not a lost cause they merely need to find something to give their sound a bit of a kick and push them up the ranks within their genre.

Tracks like “The Streets will Rain with Blood Tonight” and “Pretty Girls Make Graves” show the extent of their sound and you can just picture all the different directions that they could flow into. Breaking The Day certainly have options and are not a lost cause to be written off into a sea of fast failed prog bands but if they just continue to produce records exactly the same as this then they are at risk of ending up that way some day.
