Album Review
The Defiled - Grave TimesThe Defiled - Grave Times

The Defiled are a metal band from London, and this is their debut album that was given away for free in the February 2011 issue of Metal Hammer.

Following their recent stint on the Jagermeister Music Tour around the UK with Exit Ten and Sylosis, the band has recorded and put out their first full length album, just before their next trip around our country with Murderdolls. The band’s sound combines ear shatteringly heavy metalcore infused with elements of industrial metal from the likes of Ministry and the heavy horror vibe from the likes of Rob Zombie’s music. It makes for a distinctive brand of music within a genre where originality is harder and harder to come by, it will defiantly catch the attention of listeners.

One of the things I notice about the vocals is that they resemble one of my favourite locals bands, the now disbanded Manchester metal band I-Def-I which makes me smile because their vocals were one of the things I adored.

The first 2 tracks “In The Land of Fools” and “Call To Arms” are big heavy bruisers that set the bar for the other 8 songs to follow at a very high standard with lots of double bass and heavy riffing backed by synth and programming; “The Ressurectionist” steps up to the mark to join the other 2 up at the high standard, beautifully mixing high and deep vocals over the top of one another adds to the eerie feel. The melodic chorus sucks you in to think it’s safe then smashes through your ears by kicking back into the mayhem.

The entire album has bounce to it; you can almost feel how a live show would go from the pit. It’s good to have an exciting metal band that can get you bouncing, kicking ass in the pit, head banging and singing along all within one song. The album follows the standard set in the first song right through to the end apart from “Final Sleep” which is a very soft song to close the album that doesn’t excite as much as the rest.

If The Defiled keep this sound and energy going then Murderdolls is going to be one hell of a gig and might see their career really take off this year and I for one am very excited to see it happen.
