A Day To Remember - What Separates Me From YouA Day To Remember – What Separates Me From You

Since A Day To Remember formed back in 2003 they have grown from a local band with a small dedicated fan base to a huge worldwide success who are now one of the most recognised bands in the whole metal-core scene and it is easy to see why as the band are forever touring and releasing new material with only a mere 18 months passing between the release of their third album ‘Homesick’ and their latest album ‘What Separates Me From You’.

‘What Separates Me From You’ is the bands third album with Victory Records and was produced by Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory and it is a short sweet album that has ten tracks which run for a total of just over 30minutes which will have you slamming that repeat button down as soon as the final guitar riff is laid down on the closing track ‘If I Leave’.

The album opens in a proper hectic way with the ever so fierce sounding ‘Sticks And Bricks’ with frontman Jeremy Mckinnon screaming his lungs out within the opening seconds and moments later the big sounding guitars come in with proper jaw dropping loud riffs and like true A Day To Remember style the song has a big melodic chorus which just shows off the bands cross over sound.

‘All I Want’ is the band’s latest single and it starts off in a more toned down way from the opening track and grows into a melodic radio friendly anthem that is just crying to be played out on radio 1 but these days if your name aint Coldplay or Kings Of Leon then you have no hope.

‘It’s Complicated’ is a proper bounce along number that has some fantastic basslines on offer , once again the song is really radio friendly and melodic and is also just crying out to be played on the radio as it has that commercial sound about it.

‘This Is The House That Double Built’ is so different from anything that A Day To Remember have done it is like they have taken the whole hardcore style down a stadium rock route, its big sounding with lots of backing chants of ‘Woaaah’ but has to be the weakest offering on the album.

‘2ND Sucks’ is one of the first songs that A Day To Remember and their record label Victory Records played to the world from the new album by putting little 50 second clips up on their My Space page, the song only actually runs for 2minutes and 28seconds and is a proper mosh pit anthem, opening with a Street Fighter style sound over of “Fight” before exploding into a massive flurry of hectic instrumental work which is both bound to make you go mental in the mosh pit and secondly want to pick up an instrument yourself.

The best song to sing-a-long to on the album is ‘All Signs Point To Lauderdale’ as pretty much everyone can relate to the melodic lyrics of "I hate this town, it’s all washed up, and all my friends don’t give a fuck, they’ll tell me that it’s just bad luck, when will I find where I fit in?" sometime in their lives, even if you can’t relate to the lyrics you will find it near impossible not to bop and sing-a-long.

‘You Be Tails, I’ll Be Sonic’ is one of the most creative songs on the album, the title is quite weird being named after characters from the classic Sega computer game Sonic The Hedgehog however the song is actually about second guessing leaving a girlfriend and is one hell of a mental song and has all the best elements of a true classic A Day To Remember tune with its fast paced hectic instrumental work, screamo vocals and then the more clean cut melodic chorus.

The album closes with ‘If A Leave’ a perfect song that has that whole radio friendly feel about it from start to finish with frontman Jeremy Mckinnon’s vocals coming along more melodic than ever before.

Overall A Day To Remember have made an album that is more radio friendly than it is hardcore this time but you can clearly see that as they are progressing as a band they are slowly leaving their angry roots behind and morphing into a more happy band whilst still having a few angry moments just to please the hardcore following they have had since day one, I believe that hardcore fans of the band will be more than happy with the album and also believe that A Day To Remember are going to get a whole lot more popular as they kick off 2011 with an UK tour on the back of this outstanding album.
