Album Review
Disturbed - AsylumDisturbed – Asylum

Disturbed are one of the biggest metal bands on the planet their last four albums have hit the top of the American charts and their fan base seems to grow with each and every album release but at the same time you get most major press putting the band down mainly because of their success and it seems that the release of the bands 5th studio album ‘Asylum’ is no different as there have been mixed reviews across the board, but like every Disturbed album you pretty much know what you are going to get before you give it a listen as Disturbed have a super unique sound that has worked for them for well over 10 years now.

I have been waiting for ‘Asylum’ for a long time now and have been patently checking out the various videos and songs that Disturbed have been teasing their fans with over the past couple of months with the main single release ‘Another Way To Die’ really putting a smile on my face as it covers everything that I love about Disturbed.

‘Asylum’ starts off so different from any past Disturbed album, it opens with ‘Remnants’ which happens to be the most epic track that Disturbed have ever written, it is a short 2minute 44seconds instrumental track which starts off with haunting soundscapes and as the track hits the 1minute 30seconds mark the guitars come in, with the drums following seconds later for an amazing Metallica style jamming session which then leads into the album title track ‘Asylum’ which really kicks arse.

‘Asylum’ is your typical sounding heavy yet melodic Disturbed track where front man David Draiman takes you on a beautiful sounding yet fucked up lyrical journey which flows at the pace of your typical Disturbed single, David Draiman is on top form with his vocals and the rest of the band have turned things up a notch or two with their fantastic instrumental work.

‘The Infection’ carries on that catchy yet heavy Disturbed sound, the song is big sounding with a massive infectious chorus which once again has David Draiman at the top of his game with those all so unique and perfect vocals.

‘Warrior’ is a fantastic track which reminds me of ‘Indestructible’, it flows fast and has some proper chunky guitar riffs on offer and growly vocals working alongside those unique David Draiman vocals, the chorus is well written and amazingly performed and overall the song is bound to grow to be a fan favourite.

‘Another Way To Die’ is the first single that I heard off the album a few months back now and I was impressed with how it sounds like classic Disturbed, the song flows at a catchy pace and features a great guitar solo and as soon as the song proper gets going after the 1minute mark you know that you are listening to a future mosh pit anthem.

‘The Animal’ is one of the best tracks on the album and features those classic David Draiman opening sounds , the song is heavy but at the same time it also has that catchy Disturbed vibe which is going to cement the song as a future hit.

There are so many good moments on ‘Asylum’ and you will really struggle to find any tracks that come across as a filler on the album as they are all quality in their own way for example ‘My Child’ starts off sounding very freaky with a child crying and then a heart beating then seconds later that unique Disturbed sound comes in and makes the song rock. ‘Sacrifice’ is one of the weakest tracks on the album in my opinion but at the same time it is still listenable and still sounds like everything we know and love about Disturbed.

The album finishes with ‘Innocence’ which is a solid finish to a great album and if you leave the album running for another 5minutes you will get a cover version of U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’, which is very unlike Disturbed and very interesting sounding, seriously you need to listen to it for yourself to understand what I mean.

Overall ‘Asylum’ is not the best album that Disturbed have released but it is pretty much what we have all come and expected from Disturbed, pretty much all of the songs on the album are solid but this time around they don’t stand out from the start you have to listen to the album a few times over to find those stand out songs and at the end of the day Disturbed are still doing what Disturbed do best and that is all that matters.
