Ever since Radiohead released ‘In Rainbows’
as a digital download back in 2007 where their fans
had the choice to download the album for free or
pay online what they thought the album was worth
with 90% of people choosing to download the album
for free and only a few select fans actually paying
for the album, well a few bands have since followed
in suit such as Canterbury and now Angels And Airwaves,
Tome Delonge states that Angles And Airwaves have
gone down this route because he has lost all faith
in record labels and there is not much money to
be made through record labels, but you can bet your
house on it that the new Blink 182 album will be
released through a record label whenever it is finished
as it is the most anticipated album in a long time
and will instantly sell millions of copies.
Whenever a band released a free album I start
to wonder if the album is going to be any good
and is it really a full brand new album or is
it actually full of b-sides and songs that were
never good enough to be featured on their previous
albums, this was exactly what I was thinking about
the new Angles And Airwaves album ‘Love’
and after the first listen of the album I was
still slightly thinking this but after listening
to it over and over again about 5 times, I have
come to the conclusion that ‘Love’
is a solid album and one that will grow on you
over time.
‘Love’ is what you have come to expect
from Angles And Airwaves, it follows on perfectly
from their previous albums and has that whole
massive sci-fi cinematic feel with it especially
with the opening instrumental track ‘Et
Ducit Mundum Per Luce’ which has that classic
Angles And Airwaves epic introduction which opens
the third chapter in the whole Angels And Airwaves
journey that Mr Delonge and co are taking us on.
‘The Flight Of Apollo’ kicks in next
with a strong force with massive guitar riffs
which sound like they were lifted from one of
the early Angles And Airwaves songs called ‘The
War’, the song takes you on a massive melodic
journey where you get sucked in by the huge upbeat
chorus which has Tom Delonge singing “So
life doesn’t hurt, doesn’t hurt so
badly, please don’t look at life, look at
me so sadly”, the song runs for over 6minutes
and takes you on an epic journey which you will
find you self coming back to again and again.
‘Young London’ carry’s on the
positive flow from ‘The Flight Of Apollo’
and takes you on yet another upbeat journey which
you will keep coming back to, the song features
some breathtaking guitar riffs, some meaty drum
beats and one of the best choruses on the album
which features Tom Delonge singing “Get
down girls and dance with your best friend, let
it go, the fight’s on the dance floor”
‘Epic Holiday’ is another strong
moment of the album which features of massive
range of electronic beats and synthesized sounds,
the album then takes a bit of a down turn for
the next few songs, now I don’t mean that
the song’s are bad but they are just not
as big and catchy as some of the other tracks
on the album for example ‘Cleaver Love’
is really slow paced and features really odd soundscapes,
it’s listenable but not a song you will
want to listen to that often.
The album picks up for the last two song’s
‘Letters To God Part 2’ which actually
happens to be the following on song to a song
which originally appeared on the Box Car Racer
album many years ago, the song is upbeat and flows
fast in a big sing-a-long way, whilst the closing
track ‘Some Origins Of Fire’ runs
on the same formula taking you on a vocally beautiful
journey.
There are many people in the world who hate Angels
And Airwaves and I really don’t understand
why as there is nothing to hate about the band,
well except for the fact that Tome Delonge seems
to think that he is god whilst in Angels And Airwaves,
but musically the band are fantastic, they play
music which is prefect to power walk and jog to
and is equally enjoyable in the live circuit taking
you on a journey that is unlike anything other
bands have ever done.
‘Love’ may not be the best album
from Angels And Airwaves but it is defiantly a
strong release and even better for the fact that
they are giving away such a solid album.
